The epic story of imperial Rome
If Milan is the practical, structured brain of Italian fashion, Rome is its untamed, theatrical heart. In the Eternal City, fashion has never been about mere everyday wear; it is about ritual, legacy, and a deep-seated romance with history. While northern mills scaled up for mass production, Rome’s relation to fabric remained an intimate, almost sacred art, echoing the days when ancient looms spun heavy wool for the senators' grand robes and imperial togas. The true story of Roman Alta Moda is an epic story woven from cinematic dreams, aristocratic rebellion, and the tireless hands of local artisans (artigiani).
The Reign of the Fashion Dynasties
From this cinematic fertile ground rose Rome’s definitive fashion titans, who treated fabric not just as raw material, but as an architectural medium.
Valentino: Founded by Valentino Garavani in Rome in 1960, the maison came to define pure, unapologetic elegance. His signature "Valentino Red" wasn't just a color; it was an emotional statement, demanding a dye precision that could only be achieved by masterful textile artisans.
Fendi: What started as a modest fur and leather workshop on Via del Plebiscito grew into an avant-garde powerhouse. Alongside Karl Lagerfeld, the five Fendi sisters revolutionized textiles, treating delicate fabrics like leather and shearing them with the fluid lightness of silk chiffon.
